Rich and diverse has been the social life of Yambol. Many celebrations are being organized, where Kukerlandia is the greatest event. There are other festivals too, not less important and not less interesting. But let us start from the very beginning.
The traditional Kukers’ games in Yambol are very popular. The beginning of Kukerlandia was laid on the twelfth of February, in the year two thousand, when in Veselinovo village and in Yambol a Wine Carnival was organized. Kukers’ groups from all over Bulgaria were invited. The following year, the Municipality also took part in the organization of that event. From two thousand and four the Wine Carnival has dropped out and there was only a Fancy carnival in the city. From the following year on however, some foreign Masquerade groups joined the program of the Festival of Yambol. From the first months of two thousand and ten the name Kukerlandia became a trade mark of Yambol Municipality.
Other equally major event in Yambol is the National day of Christmas Carol Singers. Then in the city square in front of the City hall, carol singer groups from all Bulgaria come. Every group has its performance, solo, music, Christmas Carols and psalms that are typical for the region they come from. The singers from Yambol show the Christmas dance buenek that is known only in our region. The high spirit and the merry mood go hand in hand with plenty of wine and various goodies.
Every spring the Musical Days are organized in Yambol - Golden Diana. Hosts of those are the Municipality and the Chamber Ensemble Dianopolis. As a tradition the ensemble gives the first concert at the festival. For several days Yambol becomes the center of classic music and attracts its fans from the whole country. Jazz music also has its place during the musical days. Well known musicians and also young talents participate in the festival.
The Days of the Theater Nevena Kokanova, are organized in June on the stage of Yambol Drama Theater that bears the name of the actress whose career began exactly here. The first holiday of the theaters was held under the name Yambol Spring and took place in nineteen sixty two. In two thousand and four the festival was restored and renamed after Nevena Kokanova. The festival has no jury and it is only the audience which makes an assessment of performances.
Other very popular celebration in Yambol is the National Puppet-Theatrical Festival Mihail Lukatnik. It is organized every two years and its host is the Puppet Theater Georgi Mitev. The festival is on a competitive base and has two parts – competition for a play and competition for a performance. Actors from puppet theaters from the whole country and also foreign guests take part in this competition. Children are infatuated with the beauty of this art and their parents have nostalgic memories about their own childhood.
The Art Festival Open Spaces is another interesting event in the town. In the course of several days in different places in Yambol innovative and cultural events are organized. Actors from various genres unite their efforts, inspired with the new ways to perceive the urban spaces. Processions and parades, performances, workshops, games for children and adults, concerts, theatres, exhibitions and any kind of attractions are organized.
For a several years now the Municipality of Yambol and the Youth’s Center Georgi Bratanov have been hosts of the cultural event for young people – Graphiti Fest. In May the Park of Yambol becomes a big colorful picture. Artists from whole Bulgaria take part in it.
Yambol keeps and develops the rich folklore of its region. Confirmation of that is the National Children’ Folklore Dance Festival under the name It was born and re-born that has been organized for many decades now. The stage of Yambol becomes the meeting point of students from the whole country, who come here to show their achievements in the sphere of folklore. The competition is both for individual and group performers of folklore music up to the age of nineteen.
According to the tradition, every year the season of motorcycling starts in Yambol. The first big motor assembly for the year gathers motorists from Bulgaria and from abroad. They meet in the picturesque natural beauties of Bakadzhik Mount that is close to the city. The gathering of rockers impresses with amusing competitions, roaring engines, hard music and good mood. After the formal opening by tradition the rockers make a tour around the streets of Yambol.
